Mary Martin Fashion Designer & Her Tribute to Cecil the Lion
An honorary tribute to Cecil the African Lion and the creative ingenuity of a London fashion designer ~ Mary Martin....
Mary Martin, inspirational fashion designer, her creation of ‘Cecil The Lion’ dress became a world-wide inspiration…her message, “to create an awareness and raise funds towards ‘Cecil The Lion Campaign’ and for the continued research and protection of the majestic, powerful and endangered Lions of Africa.”
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Mary Martin London (her fashion label) show at No.41 Mayfair, London. I explored behind the scenes, backstage and had the initial honour, to interview Mary Martin herself and find out more about her creation of ~ ‘Cecil The Lion Dress’ (which went viral via social media).
Interviewing the talented fashion designer, Mary Martin after her very successful fashion show in Mayfair, London recently, was very inspirational! Mary’s key ingredient to her success, is having the ‘absolute passion for what I do.’ Her enthusiasm and dynamic personality, certainly shows in her colourful display and unique fashion collection on the catwalk.
Mary explains, how ‘she loves to work with a variation of colourful fabrics from around the world and not one garment is designed the same.’ Her unique approach to fashion gives her the ‘cut above the rest’, bespoke dresses, carefully made and sewn together by hand, personally by Mary herself, even it takes her until early hours of the morning! Her eclectic range of Mary Martin London designs are eye~catching, from elegant couture dresses, bohemian chic, vintage, bold African colours, ‘rock edge chic’ style, her exclusive collections has also caught the eye of celebrities and recently an honorary award at the African Fashion Week in South Africa.
The probing question on her ‘Cecil the Lion’ dress (which went viral through the social media!)…
Mary Martin was so shocked by the killing of Cecil, and so deeply touched by the indecent act, she created her dress in dedication and honour to Cecil. The black dress depicts his beautiful mane and the colour representing a time of mourning and respect for Cecil the Lion.
During my interview with Mary, one thing is certain, she is a unique, talented fashion designer and a women who goes after her dreams…and the catwalk right now, is the place where it’s all happening for Mary Martin London….

I’m blogger on fashion, lifestyle and environmental awareness, a blog gives me the liberty, a voice, especially, regarding the inhumane killing of Cecil…. I was born and raised in South Africa and my love for wildlife and nature is something which is innately within me. I lived within the African Savannah for many years ,for most of my childhood and watched the beautifully, powerful, majestic big cats of Africa from a distance.
Being in the presence of a lion in the wild, in its natural surroundings is really indescribable, their courageous essence of spirit, their majestic presence, the humbling experience never leaves you. This is how, I imagine it would have been, to be in the presence of Cecil the Lion.
Ironically the tragic fate of Cecil, is actually a reminder of how vulnerable we, as human beings are. Facing a male lion in the wild, with no intention to hunt or kill them, unarmed, what chances would you have against such a powerfully beautiful animal?
The hunter, his name not even worth mentioning on my blog, obviously has been harassed by press, a few blunt words from celebrities alike expressing their disgust, world -wide news and still is. I believe, we do have a certain responsibility to take on here, Cecil’s killing was and still is a symbolic representation of a serious imbalance between Mother Nature and humanity, a complex topic with many layers.
A misconduct of human indecency, ignorance and lack of compassion.
My point is… This is a ‘TRIGGER’ in more ways than one (literally), for something this foul to touch our human hearts and realise there is something ‘amiss’ here, unnatural… For the Lion Kingdom to continue to thrive and be protected from such brutality, we do need to take a stance…
A must to watch, this very touching dedication to Cecil the Lion ~You Tube ~

So the BIG question is, what can we do about the tragedy of Cecil the Lion? How does this affect us, as a human species, our natural environment and the important role the ‘king of the jungle’ plays in our delicate natural, eco~system?
Interesting facts and words of wisdom by the well~respected, Sir David Attenborough….
Sir David Attenborough has warned the killing of Cecil the lion is a sign of the “terrible state of the human psyche” and nothing to do with conservation ~ The Independent
The BBC presenter and naturalist told the Evening Standard one of the most fundamental human urges is to seek power and killing an animal is often a way to fulfil that desire.
